The "Hail Scale"
The
"Hail Scale" is an
accurate scale to assure the
correct reporting of the size of hail. Constructed of strong flexible plastic
the
"Hail Scale" won’t melt or rust.
With the hail scale, hail stone sizes can be determined two ways.
Try to slip the
hailstone through the pre-sized holes until you find one that’s to
small.
For example, a golf
ball sized stone will slip the hole labeled “Golf-ball but won’t slip
through the next smaller hole labeled “ping pong ball” At this point you could
determine the size of the stone and report it as “between golf-ball and ping
pong
ball in size.
At the bottom of the "Hail Scale" is a 6” ruler divided into 1/8” increments. This enables the spotter to lay the hailstone on the "Hail Scale" and report the hailstone as 1 5/8” diameter or at its longest point” whichever applies.
The
"Hail Scale" enables the
spotter two methods of reporting the size of hailstone to public safety
officials and in turn report the measured
size to the local National Weather Service office.
The N.W.S. can use this accurate information to correctly inform the
general public as well as other area public safety officials. The N.W.S. is only
able to issue reports & warnings to the public, based on the information that is
reported to them. The more accurate
the information… the better for everyone.
Features:
The holes were machined into the
"Hail Scale" by a
computer controlled milling machine.
Most are accurate to within a 1/1000th of an inch of
size specified by the National Weather Service.
For hailstones larger than the holes, a reference guide has been printed on the "Hail Scale" itself, i.e. tennis ball, grapefruit & ext.
